Scent of a woman

Scent of a woman

‘Long after one has forgotten what a woman wore, the memory of her perfume lingers.’ – Christian Dior

Smell is probably our most powerful sense. Certain scents can instantly transport you to a specific time and place. The smell of freshly baked cookies takes you back to your grandma’s farm kitchen, and the smell of jasmine reminds you of long summer evenings underneath the stars with your first love.

Just like we attribute certain smells to certain moments, we also attribute specific scents to people. You know the women in your life not only by the way they dress, talk and act but also by the way they smell.
Elaine Whelan, head of the Fragrance and Cosmetics Department for all four Mopani Pharmacy stores, says there’s nothing more intimate and alluring than a good perfume.

“This invisible part of a woman’s style influences how those around her comprehend who she is. It’s worth finding the best perfume to suit your character. Although the tradition of a woman having a signature scent is still very much the norm for some women, the new trend is more likely to treat perfume like an accessory, changing it to suit your mood and needs.”

Choosing a new perfume to try out can, however, be a daunting affair. To help you select your next scent, Get it has compiled a brief guide to the major categories with suggestions of when to wear what.

Infused with the tangy essence of citrus fruits, these perfumes are lively and energetic. The smell can be linked to the colours of the fruits they represent: Happy yellows, warm oranges and zesty green.
Citrus perfume makes you feel happy, alive and vibrant. These types of perfumes will serve as an instant pick-me-up during cold winter months or on rainy, grey days.

Just hearing the word floral conjures up images of fragrant roses, sweet-smelling violets or the divine freshness of a bunch of lavender. Floral perfumes are typically light, fresh and youthful and are perfect for springtime. Some are single note, but most combine the scent of various flowers to create the classic sweet smell we associate with these fragrances.
When to wear? Wear these if you want to complete your pretty-in-pink look, or for your best friend’s wedding.
Perfumes: Chanel No 5, Karl Lagerfeld Chloe, Anaïs Anaïs by Cacherel, Estée Lauder’s Beautiful, Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Eau de Toilette, Estée Lauder Pleasures and Elizabeth Arden 5th Avenue.

Do you want to play up your bad girl vibes? Then put on some fruity perfume! They are fresh and spicy and give a bit more edge than floral. These perfumes are infused with the bright and familiar smell of your favourite fruits, think strawberry, cherry, apple, peach and mango.

Going green with perfumes means that you will smell natural and energetic. Think freshly mown grass, peppermint or the smell of your garden after the first leaves start to appear in springtime.

Perfumes: Chanel No. 19, Ralph Lauren Safari, Escada Sport Country Weekend, Escada Magnetism, Adidas Adrenaline Woman, Chanel Chance and Cologne Mugler.

These perfumes are sexy, think red lingerie, sky-high stilettos and cocktails in a five-star restaurant bar. Oriental perfumes are distinctly feminine and sensual and feature an earthy, spicy scent such as ambergris often combined with warm notes of patchouli and amber.
When combined with florals, these scents are known as “florientals”. Vanilla, the ultimate comfort scent, is also often present.

Woody perfumes have more of a unisex vibe and are the most masculine type. These scents are based on notes of bark and moss and evoke a particular brand of no-nonsense femininity.
